In 2028 we will once again be offering the Ultimate Tigers of Sumatra Photo Workshop. This adventure represents the absolute pinnacle of Indonesia wildlife photography workshops, and offers the only realistic opportunity to observe and photograph one of the world’s rarest big cats. Thanks to our relationship with a private wildlife conservation organisation, we have been granted special access to prime Sumatran tiger habitat that does not permit open public access. The region where our workshop is based supports a healthy and stable population of Indonesia’s top predator.
Before the workshop begins, the resident conservation team carefully monitor the area’s commonly used tiger trails and travel corridors. They do this using a combination of camera traps and regular inspections of traditional scent-marking locations. During the workshop we will conduct early morning and late afternoon wildlife drives through the jungle by vehicle. While locating and photographing the magnificent Sumatran tiger is our primary objective, the surrounding rainforest is rich with wildlife and offers opportunities to encounter many other species. Possible sightings include the Sumatran tapir (also known as the Malayan or Asian tapir), sun bear, Sumatran barking deer, swamp buffalo, lesser mouse-deer, Asian palm civet, as well as several species of primates and birds.
As the workshop name suggests, the experience takes place on the island of Sumatra, situated west of Indonesia’s most populous island, Java. International arrivals into Indonesia will be through Jakarta, after which we will continue with a domestic flight to North Sumatra. From there, private transportation will take us to our workshop base.
Accommodation during the workshop consists of comfortable, clean private rooms equipped with Western-style facilities, including hot-water showers. Meals feature freshly prepared Indonesian cuisine. If you have specific dietary requirements, please inform us in advance, as we can generally cater to most needs.
The Sumatran tiger is among the rarest tiger subspecies remaining in the wild. Although our team is highly skilled and has deep knowledge of the tigers’ territories, movement corridors, and behaviour, sightings can never be guaranteed.
This workshop offers what is without parallel the best opportunity available to search for and photograph Sumatran tigers in their natural environment. Participation is limited to just four photographers, making the experience highly personal, and is suitable for photographers of all skill levels. Individual guidance and photographic support will be provided throughout the workshop.
Participation is by application only. If you would like to express your interest or receive further information, please contact us.
Itinerary
Days 1 - 8: Sumatra
The workshop begins on the 17th of September with a domestic flight from Jakarta to north Sumatra. We have a one-night stay at our arrival city. Very early on the following morning we will transfer by private transport to our jungle lodge, which will be our base for the duration of the workshop.
Prior to our arrival into tiger territory the resident conservation team will be monitoring regularly used trails and corridors through both the use of camera traps and also visual inspection of established "marking" spots. During our stay in this area we will be using vehicles for pre-dawn and afternoon/evening wildlife drives in the jungle.
Day 9: Sumatra to Jakarta
After an early breakfast we will depart the lodge and travel back to the airport for our domestic return flight to Jakarta. If your departing flight home is not until the following day we can recommend and arrange an airport hotel for you.

His commitment to providing exceptional experiences has led to collaborations with respected international photo workshop providers.
Phillip is also credited with pioneering New Zealand multi-region photography workshops. In 2005, he founded Capture New Zealand, offering exclusive photography workshops in New Zealand.
Currently, Phillip is focusing on photographing Indonesia's most elusive and endangered wildlife species, celebrating the natural wonders that call the world's largest archipelago home.
Reviews
Yet another well planned and well-executed journey with Phillip. The excursion to the lodge was an adventure all by itself! Once there, we were pampered day and night. The area was spacious, serene, and extremely isolated. Aside from the Sumatran Tiger (which we did see in the wild), there was an abundance of wildlife and birds to focus on. Having been to Indonesia multiple times, we found the temperature and humidity a bit cooler than usual. Perpetual food, friends, FUN, and frequent exploration, it was magical. Compared to many of his other treks that we have enjoyed, this one was relaxed and tranquil. Just sorry that it ended so soon, could've stayed for another week! Can't wait until the next trip.

I have had the pleasure of joining Phillip on a few Indonesian trips now and can honestly say that his meticulous planning and attention to detail have made for lots of memorable photographic and cultural experiences. The small group adventures that Philip undertakes ensure we are all well looked after. With the ability to communicate and interact with the locals, Phillip provided us with a number of unique and fun interactions. I am already packing my camera gear in readiness for his next adventure! (Reviewed on Google)

Phillip is an experienced and thoughtful workshop leader. I have completed two trips to Indonesia with him, and I can confidently say that his trips are well-planned and offer a variety of photographic experiences. Having resided in Indonesia, Phillip has excellent local contacts. His ability to speak the local language makes for journeys that are both amazing and intimate.
